Waste Awareness Course an 'Eye Opener' for Gateshead Company
Chris Hayward of Renew Tees Valley presenting Gary Thompson of Innovention Ltd with his CIWM Waste Awareness Certificate
Issued: 6 May 2008
A director of a Gateshead company formed to develop sustainable materials for the construction industry has demonstrated his company's commitment to environmental best practice by becoming one of the first people in the region to gain a nationally recognised waste awareness qualification.
Innovention Limited specialises in the application of recycled materials and is currently working with a number of major organisations on the development of innovative products for use in a new design of sustainable building. Construction of the first of these revolutionary, carbon-free houses is scheduled to commence in 2009.
Innovention Director, Gary Thompson, was one of the first people to enrol on a Chartered Institute of Waste Management (CIWM) Waste Awareness Certificate course, designed to help businesses and other organisations minimise the waste they produce and manage what is left more sustainably.
The course is delivered by the recently launched Resource Network North East project (ResNET), which is currently the only organisation in the region accredited by the CIWM to deliver it. Delegates who successfully complete the one-day course receive the nationally-recognised and accredited CIWM Waste Awareness certificate, which is a foundation level certificate and similar to a NVQ Level 1 course.
Gary Thompson said:-
"As our company is dedicated to re-using the waste other organisations produce in new zero-carbon buildings, it made sense to find out how we can manage our waste more efficiently. The course really opened my eyes to the size of the problem - more than 20 million tonnes a year nationally currently goes to landfill."
The course is delivered on behalf of ResNET by Chris Hayward, Technical Manager- Waste Management and Recycling with Renew Tees Valley (RTV). Places are still available on the next course, which will be held at RTV's Middlesbrough offices on 14th May 2008. Places can be reserved by using the link on the CIWM website http://www.ciwm.co.uk or by telephoning Chris on 01642 438 420 or by email at chayward@renewteesvalley.co.uk
