Big Lottery

general.enquiries@biglotteryfund.org.uk
Launched on 1 June 2004, the Big Lottery Fund will build on the experience and best practice of both organisations to simplify funding in those areas where the two bodies currently overlap, and to ensure lottery funding provides the best possible value for money.
However, we intend to achieve more than simply adding the two existing bodies together. As well as leading on good practice in funding distribution, we will take the lead on joint working on a range of Lottery issues and develop new approaches to the way we work with organisations funded by the lottery.
We will continue to fund for charities and the voluntary sector and health, education and the environment, but will also take on the Millennium Commission's ability to fund large-scale regenerative projects. We will be a fund for community transformation, from smaller grants at local level through to big capital projects, intended to regenerate and revitalise communities.

Resource Recovery Foundation
www.resourcesnotwaste.org
info@resourcesnotwaste.org
The Resource Recovery Forum was established to research and promote the effective recovery of natural resources from waste, with due weight given to environmental, social and economic considerations.
Recognising the complexity of these issues, including the global nature of markets and demand for recovered resources, the potential for increased resource recovery is substantial, and will contribute significantly to sustainable development objectives. In working with the concept of a waste hierarchy, in which waste prevention is always of paramount importance, the Forum recognises that some waste is inevitable. Accordingly, RRF seeks to provide best practice guidance on the environmental, economic and social effects of all resource recovery options.
The Forum has no preferences in principle for either materials or energy recovery, but provides impartial information on the best practicable environmental options, environmental impacts, societal practicalities and technical innovations, to assist decision-makers in determining national, regional and local policies and strategies. This information will also provide communities with information upon which to base local debate.
The Resource Recovery Forum assesses the theory, and analyses experiences on the recovery of materials and energy, comparing and contrasting achievements and advising on judgements to be made, across the entire life cycle of products and materials.
RRF will use the diversity of its multi-sector membership (local authorities, manufacturers, retailers, waste management companies, research establishments, NGOs and academics) to develop broad, inclusive projects, funded principally through the landfill tax credit system in conjunction with the waste management industry, and also by direct grants and membership subscription. Wherever possible, joint funding with government departments, environment agencies and research bodies will be sought, to strengthen the depth and credibility of the Forum's work.
The Resource Recovery Forum seeks to support European and UK governments' waste strategies, but will also inform these bodies of innovation, technical and behavioural opportunities and barriers, with the aims of monitoring compliance with current legislation, and of informing new policies.
RRF operates a great news service, delivered daily (up to 1,000 items pa, no ads, no attachments, just useful and topical information on policy & practice from around the world) or as weekly digests. A single member organisation can add unlimited numbers of employees to this fine facility. Also, the items are archived online and are fully searchable.

We take up issues that other environmental groups don't or won't, especially those concerning women's health and reproductive systems. We have been asked to speak at many national and international conferences and are invited to respond formally to government policy and proposed legislation. Central to WEN's approach is the belief that women have the right to information to enable them to make fair choices. We also believe a precautionary approach is healthiest for people and the planet.

BRE
www.bre.co.uk
bremap@bre.co.uk
The Building Research Establishment (BRE) has a new web-based information system to identify the best ways of dealing with waste materials. The system is made up of 2 complimentary elements - BREMAP, a geographical information system, and SalvoMIE a materials information exchange. Together they define the best practicable option for any UK site or company having to deal with waste.
BREMAP(www.smartwaste.co.uk) provides the locations of reputable businesses involved in the collection, storage, haulage, reuse, reclamation, recycling and disposal of construction and demolition wastes. It has been developed by BRE and funded by Biffaward through landfill tax credits and a grant from the Institution of Civil Engineers R&D Enabling Fund.
SalvoMIE (www.salvomie.co.uk) provides an advertising and trading ground for a selection of available materials. These will range from large quantities of scrap demolition timber and recycled aggregates, to smaller quantities of new bricks and plasterboard off-cuts left over from a building project, or shrubs and topsoil from a landscaping project. SalvoMIE was originally funded by the Department of Environment Transport and Regions and is now being managed by Salvo.
Entering a user's postcode into BREMAP brings up a map of the different waste services - and available materials and products (this part of the database being updated daily) - in that area. Basic and advanced searches can be made. For example, a basic search could look for waste management facilities within 20 miles of a user's postcode. An advanced search could look for waste facilities dealing in timber pallets within 20 miles, but restricted to Bedfordshire or the Midlands.
Many existing databases and much industry literature detailing landfill sites, transfer stations, incinerators, recycling sites, reclamation companies, composting facilities and manufacturer take-back schemes, are encapsulated by BREMAP into a consistent and accessible format. Currently, around 9,000 companies able to perform some type of service to the industry are registered on the website. Anyone wanting to edit their company details or add their company to BREMAP can complete the registration form available at www.smartwaste.co.uk or send an e-mail to bremap@bre.co.uk.

Middlesbrough Environment City
www.menvcity.org.uk
menvcity@aol.com
Welcome to the web site of Middlesbrough Environment City (MEC). We are a locally based charity - one of only four environment cities in England. The aim of Environment Cities is to demonstrate ways of managing cities and large towns in more sustainable ways - promoting the environment alongside economic regeneration and social needs. Middlesbrough, as a town, has many challenges but also many opportunities. We have seen many improvements in our environment in recent years, most notably the cleaning up of the River Tees – where salmon and seals can be seen once more.
However, much more remains to be done. At MEC we believe strongly in both partnerships and grass roots action to bring about environmental improvements and benefits and as you look through our web site you will find plenty of evidence of both. MEC leads on Local Agenda 21, on behalf of the local authority, and this unique ‘bottom up' approach to sustainable development provides opportunities for all to be involved in improving quality of life across the town.
We are also, of course, always looking to forge new partnerships and identify new projects – so I would encourage you to contact us to discuss any ideas you may have. I hope that you will be inspired by our web site and that it will encourage you to take action for our shared environment – protecting it for our future generations.
